The village of Ahwatukee Foothills or commonly called Ahwatukee, makes up the southernmost section of Phoenix. This 35.8 square miles village from the county of Maricopa has a population of 83,464 (as of 2016). The word “Ahwatukee” is from the Crow Indian language which means “house of my dreams”. It has been dubbed as such because a large number of residents moved here to build their dream house, overlooking the serene desert.

In 1921, Dr. William Van Bergens Ames, who was notably known as the co-founder of Northwestern University’s now-closed dental school built one of the first houses in the foothills of the South Mountain. Due to its vast size, exuberant cost and the nature of its isolated location, it was dubbed as “The Mystic House” by Chandler Arizonan but The Ames prefers to call it Casa de Sueños.

After the death of Dr. Ames and his wife, it was bought by a certain Helen Brinton and after her death, it was demolished in 1979. The development of the village only began in 1970. Ahwatukee’s Elementary School Districts are Kyrene, Laveen, and Tempe while the Secondary School District is Tempe. Statistics show that 35,322 of Ahwatukee’s residents are white collar employees while 4,314 are blue collar employees.

There are 30,351 housing units, 3,342 were built between 2000 and 2009 and 840 in 2010 or later. Planning to go around Ahwatukee?
