“What Are The Signs of a Pool Leak?”
Higher Water Bills
While there could be multiple reasons for higher water bills, it’s important you quickly rule out the possibility of a pool leak. If it is in fact a leak, you want to get it located and repaired as soon as possbile before it leads to further damage and costs.
Pool Losing Water
The most common sign of a pool leak is your pool losing water. While evaporation will also cause your pool to lose water, water loss in large amounts usually points to a leak.
Chemical Imbalance
Keep your pool water’s chemicals balanced is essential to it being clean and safe to use. Chemicals should be checked regularly and if they become difficult to keep balanced, a leak may be the reason why.
Wet Spots
If you start to notice constant wet spots in the same spot, you very well may have a pool leak. Wet spots can appear in your yard or in your pool decking depending on where the leak is. These could easily be the sign of a skimmer or plumbing leak.
Cracked or Falling Pool Tiles
Cracked tiles can happen because of movement in the earth’s surface or because of low pool water which exposes them to too much sunlight and dryness. Once a crack forms, water is likely to seep through and damage the pools surface and structure.
Algae Growth
Pool leaks tend to let important chemicals out of your pool, creating an environment for algae to thrive. If you are consistent with regular maintenance and algae still finds a way to grow, you likely have a pool leak.
“What Causes a Pool Leak?”
Surface Cracks
While the surface of your pool has a long lifespan, it will eventually start to wear out over time. After years of use you may being to notice little cracks and such beginning to form. Ocassionaly, however, the ground beneath your pool can move as the Earth’s surface shifts. This can stretch the surface of your pool as the concrete below it expands and shrinks back down to size. If it stretches too much, large cracks can begin to form. Once even the smallest of cracks appears, water will begin to feed through it.
Structural Cracks
If the crack in your pools surface don’t get properly repaired, it will begin to leak through to the surface underneath it. The structure can then suffer damages that will lead to the formation of cracks over time. If these are left to grow, the soil beneath your pool will start to erode. If ignored, your pool is bound to extreme damage and will be unsafe to use
Equipment Issues
Every piece of your pool equipment has an important purpose. For example, the pool pump is usually considered the heart of your swimming pool. If it stops running properly, chemicals can become imbalanced, which then will lead to a handle full of issues. If these issues don’t get resolved, pool leaks are likely to form over time.
Underground Plumbing
Wet spots in your yard or decking are likely due to an underground leak. This type of leak is usually caused by damaged underground plumbing that carries water to and from your pool. Damaged plumbing goes easily unnoticed since it’s not something you are able to inspect on a daily basis so keeping an eye out for the signs is crucial.
Pool Skimmer
The skimmer’s job is to catch debris in your pool as the pump filters the water. If you notice a crack where the skimmer contacts the plaster, it’s safe to assume a leak may occur as well.
